10 Highly Recommended Books to Learn Italian for Beginners - with Audio

I honestly do not want to learn Italian, but my conditions force me to do so. Studying in Politecnico di Torino, or internationally it is more common to say the Polytechnic University of Turin, requires me to obtain the second level of Italian language as the requirement of my graduation. The second level means the A2 level. It is not really high level of Italian style, but people say it is essential to survive in here and it would be useful for our future career.

And they are absolutely right. Although Italia is the part of the European continent, do not ever expect that everyone understands English. Especially in the region where it is not one of the popular tourist destinations, such as Turin, the place where I live for two years. Ordering coffee in a bar, going to the supermarket, buying a ticket at the train station, shopping in the shopping centre, and talking with your neighbour surely need to speak in Italian, for sure.

Without a doubt, the best method to learn Italian is by practising it with native or attending the intensive language course. Yet, what if you wanted to prepare for everything before your arrival by your self so that you would not be surprised by this culture shock after coming here. These books are fit for you who want to study Italian, learning the language, or to you who wants proper preparation before coming to this adorable country. And, I can send it to you, for “gratis”.

1. Nuovo Espresso A1 and A2 with Audio – Luciana Ziglio, Giovanna Rizzo

Starting with the A1 level, you will be guided step by step how to properly understand it. This book is entirely written in Italian, but you can understand it quickly since it uses straightforward language. Then,  after finishing the A1 level of the book, go on the level A2. Your capability can be levelled up by following this. Trust me.

2. Teach Yourself Italian Conversation with Audio – Maria Guarnieri, Federica Sturani

Actually, if your goal is to survive in daily life, this book provides some sample conversations that is used by many Italians in the commonplace, such as, when you were in a bar, supermarket, train station, in a bus, and so on. What I did with this book was, I printed this book, played the audio, and I repeated what it was said in the audio file. By doing so, you would have a feeling that you are involved in the situation in question. This book is as if it became your digital partner in improving your speaking skill. It really works.

3. Basic Italian A Grammar and Workbook – Stella Peyronel, Ian Higgins

Do not hate grammar! It is true, it is exceptionally annoying to study grammar, but it is essential. I use this book to sharpen my understanding of the previous book I mentioned. Sometimes, I face some doubts, and I asked to my self “why is it like this, why is not like that” and I found the answer from this book, about the grammar rule. It is useful, for real!

4. Corso di Italiano per Studenti Strainieri – Giovanna Sanna

There are also some Italian classes which we can sit in and learn Italian at my university. They teach very well, and this book is one of the materials they use to teach us. Unfortunately, there is no answer key for this. Yet, you can use this as your exercise.

Bonus Books, ci sono altri libri che puoi usare

After all, there are other books you can use to sharpen your skill. You could have this book also.
5. Collins Italian Grammar
6. Facile Libro di Italiano per studenti strainieri A1 – P. Cassiani, L.Mattioli, A. Parini
7. Intensive Italian Workbook – Anna Proudfoot, Tania Batelli Kneale, Anna Di Stefano, Daniela Treveri Gennari
8. Learn Italian in A Hurry – Michael P, San Filippo
9. Ecco! Grammatica Italiana – Claudio Manella
10. The Big Green Book of Italian Verbs – Katrien Maes Christie, Daniel Franklin

I already passed the exam of Italian A2 level (followed by study hard sadly), and I got a certificate like this.

This level is not a native-like level of Italian, but it is remarkably enough to survive in your daily life. By mastering up to this level, you could speak with people you met in the street, have a conversation with cashier worker in supermarkets, ask to people just in case if you were lost, understand the meaning of any written advertisements and announcements in public places, make friends with Italian, understand what people were talking ear to you, answer if someone asked you something in the street, have a conversation with waiters in a bar, restaurant, and many more. But, of course, because this is merely A2 level, you might still do not understand when people talk to you too fast, or they use some advanced vocabularies. However, it is enough. Yet, surely, it needs efforts.
